Ninety bushels at a time

A concrete grain elevator with its headhouse standing over a rail siding

The Muscatine Farmers' Co-op poured this elevator in 1911. Wagons came down Grain Dock Road, rolled onto the scale in the headhouse, and tipped into the pit. A good team could pull ninety bushels up the ramp. That was a full load, and the number got painted on the bins.

The co-op moved upriver in 1987 and the building sat empty for thirty-two years. Jess Kowalczyk found it in 2019 with pigeons in the leg and the scale still true to the pound. She and Marco Reyes put the brewhouse where the grain pit was, cut three garage doors into the east wall and kept everything else: the scale, the chutes, the ninety.

We brew lagers slowly, IPAs fresh and one sour at a time. Dale Hinz ran this elevator for twenty-two years. He hosts trivia on Wednesdays and still corrects our history.
